Turkish Marble Encyclopedia: A Complete Guide to Stones, Regions & Sourcing
The Turkish Marble Encyclopedia A complete reference to the stones, regions, finishes and trade practices behind the world's largest marble industry — prepared by YaSeMarble for the architects, importers, contractors and developers we work with. ~40% of world stone reserves · #1 marble exporter globally · 250+ stone types · 4,000 years of production 01 · Why Turkish stone matters Türkiye holds roughly 40% of the world's natural stone reserves and is the world's largest marble exporter. With 250+ stone types, a 4,000-year history, modern Italian-grade processing and direct Mediterranean and Aegean ports, Turkish stone is both the most diverse and one of the most dependable sources on the market — and the industry now favours higher value-added slabs and cut-to-size over raw blocks. For you, that means deep choice across colour, format and price tier from a single country with strong logistics. Figures are widely cited industry estimates; binding data should be confirmed from manufacturer test documents. 02 · How natural stone forms Origin decides behaviour. Marble is metamorphic — recrystallized limestone — dense and veined. Travertine and limestone are sedimentary: travertine carries natural pores, limestone is finer and more uniform. Onyx is translucent and banded; granite is harder than marble. Marble, travertine and limestone form our export core. 03 · Marble vs travertine vs limestone vs onyx The four families we export most differ in formation, surface and best use. Afyon (İscehisar): white and beige — Afyon White, Afyon Sugar, Crema Nuova. Muğla: bright whites — Muğla White, plus Milas Lilac. Marmara: white-grey with bold veining — Marmara Equator. Denizli: the world's largest travertine source — Light, Ivory, Noce, Scabos, Roman. Burdur & Bursa: warm, uniform beige marbles. Isparta: quarry and processing hub, mixed output. Elazığ: the rare red Elazığ Cherry. Taurus & South: Toros Black, plus Antalya limestones. Bilecik & Eskişehir: major beige-marble reserves. 05 · Turkish stones by colour family Each links to a detailed page with finishes, formats and verified sourcing. As all are natural, tone and veining vary between blocks and lots. Slabs (2–3 cm) suit large surfaces and bookmatching; tiles come in 30×60, 60×60 and 60×120 cm; cut-to-size is made to your drawings. Vein-cut gives linear patterns, cross-cut (fleuri) gives cloudy ones — so the cut should always be specified. Bookmatching mirrors two slabs for a feature wall, confirmed against real lot photos before commitment. 08 · Technical standards Because values vary by quarry, block and lot, we take them from the manufacturer's lot test certificate — never from generic figures. Hospitality favours consistent whites, beiges and greys; luxury residential turns to bookmatched feature walls in Marmara Equator or Milas Lilac; commercial fit-outs prioritise durable honed floors. For exteriors and wet areas we recommend travertine with brushed or sandblasted finishes, confirmed per lot. 10 · How to buy and import We quote most orders FOB from a Turkish port, with other Incoterms by agreement. For EU use, stone should carry CE marking and a Declaration of Performance (DoP) with EN references. Because stone varies between lots, the only safe practice is to approve real lot photos and obtain the manufacturer's lot test certificate for the exact material. The YaSeMarble verified approach. We are a Turkish sourcing and export partner — not a single quarry. For each request we compare suitable producers, gather current FOB price, real lot photos and manufacturer documents, verify them against the offered lot, and send everything to you before any order is placed. MULTI Producer network · DoP · CE · EN · FOB Transparent pricing · LOT Real photos 11 · Glossary Block — rough piece from the quarry. Slab — large flat face, 2–3 cm. Cut-to-size (CTS) — made to exact dimensions. Bookmatch — two mirrored slabs forming a symmetrical pattern. Vein-cut — cut parallel to bedding (linear). Cross-cut (fleuri) — cut against bedding (cloudy). Filled / unfilled — travertine pores filled or open. FOB — Free On Board. DoP — Declaration of Performance. CE marking — required for EU construction products. Lot — a batch from one block or run. Metamorphic — marble's origin. Sedimentary — travertine and limestone. Honed — smooth matte finish. 12 · FAQ Why is Turkish marble so popular? Türkiye holds ~40% of world stone reserves and is the largest marble exporter, with 250+ types, a 4,000-year history, modern processing and direct port access. Marble vs travertine vs limestone? Marble: metamorphic, dense, veined, polishes well. Travertine: sedimentary with natural pores. Limestone: softer, uniform, matte. Where is marble quarried in Türkiye? Mostly western and inner Anatolia: Afyon, Muğla, Marmara, Denizli, Burdur, Bursa, Isparta and Elazığ. What documents should I request? Technical datasheet, DoP, CE marking and EN references (e.g. EN 13755, EN 1926), plus real lot photos — verified against the offered lot before purchase. Vein-cut vs cross-cut? Vein-cut shows linear patterns; cross-cut (fleuri) shows cloudy ones. The same stone can look very different by cut. Suitable for exteriors? Many are — especially travertine and limestone with brushed or sandblasted finishes — with frost and water-absorption confirmed per lot. Found a stone here? Get price, photos and documents.
